Tan board-and-batten cottage shed on a timber-framed gravel pad with 12 inches of stone around every side

We build the ground first.

A building is only as straight as what it sits on. We specialize in ground and site preparation, timbered and non-timbered. We clear it, grade it, frame it if it needs it, and lay a laser-leveled stone pad before your building shows up.

Why it matters

Most shed problems start in the dirt.

Doors that keep closing right

Set a building out of level and the frame racks. Doors bind, latches stop lining up, and it only gets worse every season. A level pad keeps it square for good.

A floor that stays dry

Stone drains. Grass and dirt hold water against the runners and the floor. A stone pad keeps the whole building up out of the wet.

A clean set on delivery day

When the pad is ready and the right size, the building goes down once, square and level. No shimming on the fly, no "we'll come back."

Two ways to build it

Stone base or timbered site.

Same stone, same laser level, same 12 inches past every wall. The difference is the frame.

Non-timbered

Stone base

Four inches of crushed limestone, graded and laser leveled, sized a foot bigger than your building on every side. Clean, solid and the best value.

  • Best on flat or gently sloped yards
  • Most sheds and lofted barns
  • Lowest cost per square foot

Timbered

Timbered site

The same laser-leveled limestone, framed with pressure-treated timbers over landscape fabric. The frame locks the stone in, the fabric keeps the weeds out, and the edges stay sharp for years.

  • Best on slopes and where the yard falls away
  • Garages, offices and anything that should look finished
  • Holds its shape where mowers and rain hit the edges

How it goes

From grass to ready.

  1. Free site check. Send photos and a short video of the spot. We tell you straight what pad it needs, what the slope adds, and how the truck gets in.
  2. Lay it out. We mark the pad a foot past the building on every side and line the doors up where you want them.
  3. Clear and grade. Sod comes off and the ground gets cut to grade, so the pad sits on solid earth, not topsoil.
  4. Frame it. On a timbered site, treated timbers go down level over landscape fabric.
  5. Stone and laser. Four inches of crushed limestone, spread and leveled with a laser, not a guess.
  6. Building day. Your building gets delivered and set square on a pad that's ready for it.

On a budget

Leveling on blocks.

No pad? We can set your building level on solid blocks and shims instead. It costs less, and unlike a stone pad it can go on rent-to-own.

Building widthUp to 8 in. out of level9 to 16 in.

Blocks get the building level. A stone pad also keeps it dry and gives you a clean, solid apron to walk on. When the budget allows, we recommend the pad.

Good to know

How do I pay for the pad?

Stone pads and timbered sites are paid up front. They can't go on rent-to-own. Leveling on blocks can.

What if my yard is steep?

Every pad price covers up to 6 inches out of level. Each extra inch adds 5% of the pad price. Really steep spots get a quote after the site check.

Do I need a permit?

Depends on your town and the building size. Check with your township or code office before we build. We'll give you the building and pad dimensions for the application.

What about buried lines?

Tell us where your septic, propane and buried wires run. Utility lines get marked through 811 before any digging.

Why stone and not concrete?

Stone drains, stays level and costs far less than a slab. It's the right base for a shed or a portable garage.

Can I do it myself?

You can. It has to be level, solid and a foot bigger than the building on every side. If it isn't right on delivery day, the building can't go down right either. Most people let us do it.
